AMPHITHEATER PUBLIC SCHOOLS THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX IN ODYSSEY OF THE MIND COMPETITIONS

Amphitheater Public Schools has been a proud participant in the worldwide Odyssey of the Mind competition for the past 31 years. Odyssey of the Mind was established in 1978 by Dr. C. Samuel Micklus, a teacher looking to inspire his students to think outside the box and solve problems creatively. The organization has continued to inspire kids to solve problems with unique solutions.

Students from the Amphitheater District compete in the Arizona Odyssey of the Mind competition every year. Every year since 1989 students from Amphitheater have advanced from regional competitions, to state competitions and onto the World Finals. Amphitheater is the top District in terms of participation and achievement in the Arizona Odyssey of the Mind program.

What is Odyssey of the Mind?

The program provides an opportunity for teams of students to compete through creative problem-solving. Students are presented with five open-ended problems to solve. In the past these have included projects such as building mechanical devices, creating balsa wood structures that hold hundreds of pounds, constructing vehicles to complete a task, presenting a theatrical performance, solving a dilemma or presenting an interpretation of a literary classic.

Participants in Odyssey of the Mind gain multiple valuable life skills when they compete, including how to socialize, manage resources, and think in new unique ways. The problems posed to students in Odyssey of the Mind competitions enable students to work with their teams and come up with creative solutions. Students are rewarded for “style” in their problem-solving, which allows participants to think and express ideas without fear of their ideas being ridiculed or rejected. At the end of the competition, the teams are presented with a “top secret” problem to solve using limited resources. Each problem in the Odyssey of the Mind competition prepares students for real-world problems.

If you have a child who learns by doing, who enjoys a challenge and who loves to find creative solutions to problems, please enroll in an Amphitheater school and join Odyssey of the Mind.
