Plaza Construction celebrates Women In Construction week
Often regarded as an industry for men, the construction field also offers real opportunities with strong career paths for women. One of the greatest advantages is that the pay scale is higher and the level of gender pay inequality is lower than in other industries. According to NAWIC, while women make up only 9.1 percent of the U.S. construction workforce, they earn an average 95.7 percent of what their male counterparts earn, compared to the average 82 percent of what their male counterparts make across other industries.
In addition, the Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that employment in construction will grow by 21.4% until 2022, more than double the job growth across all industries. With the construction industry growing at such a fast pace it is facing imminent labor shortages, thereby opening the door to women for higher-paying, long-term employment opportunities and career paths with solid benefits, including paid vacations, holidays, bonuses, and health care.
At Plaza Construction, their workforce is currently 25% female and the women are paid the same as their male counterparts. “There isn’t a job in construction that a woman can’t do as well if not better than a man,” says Plaza’s CEO Richard Wood. “We have women managing iconic projects from 99 Hudson Street, the tallest building in the state of New Jersey, to the residential project One Thousand Museum, designed by legendary architect Zaha Hadid in Miami.”
Plaza has taken additional steps to encourage more women to enter the construction industry by posting signs at its jobsites nationwide that read “Men and Women at Work” to replace the iconic “Men at Work” signage that has been associated with the construction industry. The signs are a statement that men and women work as equals with shared responsibilities for the projects and clients they represent. Plaza opted not to go with a more generic “People at Work” sign because they wanted to raise awareness and consciousness that women are included in the industry and to create a more gender-neutral workplace environment.
To help women entering the construction field, Plaza offers a mentoring and development program to its new and existing hires. This program offers the opportunity to move into a new job every six months for 18 months, during which time employees are mentored and trained to determine which positions they are most interested in and are best suited for. Plaza has a female-friendly work environment offering accommodations to women in balancing their jobs and family lives, such as extensive maternity leaves, pre-and post-pregnancy consideration, flexible hours, and work from home schedules.
