How key workers can get free gentle sleep training for their families

Sleep training is growing exponentially in the United Kingdom as parents realize that it is an investment worth doing, both for their children and for their personal wellbeing
GentleSleepGenie is a gentle sleep consultancy practice that serves clients in person in Oxfordshire and London, as well as worldwide through video conferences. It is currently offering free sessions for NHS professionals fighting against COVID-19

GentleSleepGenie.com, the UK based sleep coaching service for children between 6 months and 6 years old, has announced free plans for the NHS health heroes battling COVID-19.

Elena Rubini, the founder of GentleSleepGenie.com, stated “Sleep is one of the most challenging topics when it comes to parenting. And the coronavirus COVID-19 is generating deep anxiety around children and families. I believe it is important that key workers are fully supported and as so I’m offering my services for free, to improve the quality of their families’ sleep so they can focus better on these critical times.”

Elena added: “Most people in the UK are not familiar with the concept of sleep training, although in the past years it has started to gain popularity. The US is a lot more used to getting help with this important topic. Unfortunately, sleep training has gotten a really bad reputation because it’s been equated with the ‘cry it out’ method (also referred to as Ferber method), where you put a baby in the crib or their room, close the door and don’t come back till the next day. Cry it out is an old way of thinking, and in today’s scientific literature, the term sleep training is a term that refers to a spectrum of approaches to help babies learn to fall asleep by themselves, in a gentle way. There’s not a strict formula that works for every parent or baby, parents need to experiment to find the right approach. I am confident that gentler approaches work better than the Ferber method, and that is what we implement at GentleSleepGenie.”

GentleSleepGenie has switched all of its consultations to video as the world is turning to lockdown. Video conferencing has proven to be useful, as sessions can be replayed later and people can focus on the advice rather than on taking notes. It can also help a lot in the case of parents that don’t live under the same roof.

As people are required to stay at home, scientific research suggests maintaining regular sleeping patterns and sleep hygiene practices. “Make sure you avoid screens at least an hour before bedtime, cut down on your caffeine intake, and create a restful environment that is dark, quiet and cool” Elena reminds us.

Children often don’t understand why they can’t go out and follow their usual routines, so it is important to communicate with them and listen to their thoughts and fears. Also, ensure you all get some exercise every day as this will help at night-time.
