Language Arts Programs at Alpine Schools Encourage Career Success

Alpine Union School District’s Language Arts Programs are rich and rigorous.

Alpine Union School District works to improve its academic excellence through Language Arts programs at elementary and middle schools.

One of Alpine Union’s unique programs is at Boulder Oaks Elementary School. Boulder Oaks offers Everyone a Reader, a volunteer program supported by the San Diego County Office of Education. In this program, trained tutors work with first through third-grade students who need extra support in reading.

At Joan MacQueen Middle School, new Language Arts curriculum has been implemented. Its ELA/literacy standards include regular practice with complex tests. Rather than focusing solely on the skills of reading and writing, the ELA/literacy standards highlight the growing complexity of texts students must read in order to be ready for the demands of college, career and life in general.

Next, the JMMS Language Arts curriculum teaches reading, writing and speaking grounded in evidence from texts, both literary and informational. The California State Standards emphasizes using evidence from texts to present careful analyses, well-defended claims and clear information. Rather than asking students questions they can answer solely from their prior knowledge and experience, the standards call for students to answer questions that depend on their having read materials with care.

Students also focus on building knowledge through content-rich nonfiction in order to be immersed in information about the world around them. This helps them develop the strong general knowledge and vocabulary they need to become successful leaders and to be prepared for their future careers and lives.
