Ben Rekhi’s powerful, very timely thriller “Watch List” has been acquired by Dark Star Pictures and Uncork’d Entertainment for a virtual theatrical release later this month.

The virtual theatrical – in lieu of a traditional theatrical release; due to theatre closures – sees a number of theatres carrying out a video-on-demand service. The film will play from August 21 exclusively through those venues.

Rekhi’s film is set against the drug wars in the Philippines. After her husband is murdered under mysterious circumstances, Maria is left to fend for her three children in a police state. As she delves into Manila’s dark underworld of cops, criminals, and drugs to find answers, she realizes the truth is never black and white, and that she must explore her own darkness to keep her family safe.

An intense thriller set in the world of the Filipino police and their often-violent war against drug dealers and users, the true story played such festivals as Mill Valley IFF, Seattle IFF, Nashville IFF, Deauville American FF and other festivals.

Rekhi, the Indian-American filmmaker who made a name for himself with “The Ashram” starring Academy Awardwinning actress Melissa Leo, said in a recent interview he was inspired to make the film after seeing a disturbing image in the media.

“The first inspiration came from a photograph (in a newspaper) that I saw of a woman cradling her husband who had just been killed. It was an image that I could not get out of my head. For weeks, I obsessed over it and ended up reaching out to the journalist who had written the story.”

Arthur Acuña, Alessandra de Rossi, and Jake Macapagal also star in the film.

An On Demand release for “Watch List” is also set for September 1.
