In the early 1990s director Timothy Hines sat down and penned the ultimate female superhero fantasy action story. A screenplay with the scope of The Lord Of The Rings and set in the year 2131, Hines created the story of an abused robot slave who breaks her “Human Injury Inhibitor” to wreak havoc on her cruel masters.

This was the slave robot “Chrome.” She joins forces with a robot underground led by a small flying repairbot named Perdix, (adeptly performed by Natasha Coppola-Shalom, grandniece of Francis Ford Coppola, niece of Nicholas Cage and cousin of Sofia Coppola), to right a planet turned upside down where humans behave in lockstep under a misguided corporate government and where robots are the only ones who retain humanity.

Hines had envisioned the style of the picture as having retro qualities reminiscent of classic era science fiction and fantasy serials like Flash Gordon (the same source George Lucas used for Star Wars) and intellectual science fiction films like the 1927 Metropolis.

As actor Dave Morrissey Jr. who plays the massive former police robot, NAL, calls it, “Wonder Woman meets Metropolis.”

Like the classic era Saturday morning serial Flash Gordon, Chrome: The Series is an episodic cliffhanger, with a new chapter that will be released every 3 months culminating in mid-2021.

The Saturday morning serials were a motion picture form popular during the first half of the 20th century, consisting of a series of short subjects exhibited in consecutive order at one theater, advancing weekly, until the series was completed. Like the modern mini series the stories were edited into chapters.

Now other popular series like “The Boys” about superheroes that are secretly bad guys, will begin delivering episodes in its second season one at a time as well.

“There’s a lot of fun in having to wait,” enthuses director Hines, “Years ago, when Darth Vader revealed that he was Luke Skywalker’s father at the end of the ‘Star Wars’ movie, ‘The Empire Strikes Back’ audiences had to wait a couple of years before seeing the next part in the cliffhanger ending. It made it loads more exciting and engaged the fans for all that time with entertaining speculation.”

Led by a cast of Katie Erin Tomlinson (now Katie Diamond), Susan Goforth, Anthony Piana, Natasha Coppola-Shalom, Dave Morrissey, Jr. and other talented cast members, much of Chrome is based on the legends of Greek, Roman and Nordic mythology. If you are familiar with these cultural stories handed down through the ages, the Character’s names may give away some of the plot. For instance, the character NAL, performed by Dave Morrissey Jr., was once a giant police robot whom the human populace became afraid of even though he could not harm humans, so he was assigned a “lifespan” as a “laborbot” hefting concrete stones and moving scrap metal. NAL was based on the character of Nordic mythology who challenged the Gods. Perdix was the character in Greek mythology who invented the tools humans use, i.e., the saw, the hammer, the axe, etc. There is so much more to Chrome but to avoid spoilers, you have to find out for yourself.

As a boy, Hines was a fan of sci-fi Flash Gordon. The Flash Gordon serial and its sequels were major productions in their time that were action-packed stories where the villain would continually place the hero into inescapable deathtraps at the end of episodes before the hero ultimately triumphed.

“We’ve come a long way since Flash Gordon and even the original Star Wars, where now story expectations and character development run much deeper,” said producer Susan Goforth in a media interview, “It was Timothy’s and my vision that a downtrodden female slave robot would rise up to lead the heroic fight against oppressive Dystopian forces. Timothy’s vision of creating the picture to feel retro is a complete re-envisioning of the superhero genre. The fans and critics have approved. It works.”
