Due to the pandemic, many sports fans worldwide turn to the internet to hear the latest sports news and discussions. To bring fans worldwide their much-needed sports information, Kevin Larney, a senior at the University of New Hampshire, recently launched Wildchat Sports, an online platform that merges the sports and entertainment industries through insightful podcasts and an e-commerce store in the digital space.

Taking inspiration from Wildchats, a program initially on the university’s radio station WUNH 91.3, Wildchat Sports started as Larney’s blog featuring his works and that of student contributors at the university. After being elected as a sports director by the university, he stepped up to bring changes in the program and make it accessible online through podcasts and digital platforms. Since then his plan was to initiate a conversation not just on campus, but off campus as well. Larney shared that some students from all over the country started reaching out asking if they could help contribute and spread the word. The platform mainly grew popularity after featuring podcasts from over 50 athletes and celebrities who not only brought sports-related discussions but also shared untold stories with Larney and his listeners.

“Over the past three years, I applied to 223 internships within the sports and entertainment industries and only a handful reached back. I was working a variety of different jobs but none of them I was passionate about. The only way for me to grow a strong reputation for myself in an industry I had no experience in was to create what was initially a blog that I named after a radio segment that I was a part of called, Wildchats,” said Larney, founder of Wildchat Sports.

To attract more listeners on and off campus, Larney interviewed sports and entertainment figures such as boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr., actors Shooter McGavin, and Christopher Lloyd, singer-songwriter Ceelo Green, football icon Jim McMahon, internet star Zach King, model and actress Camille Kostek, Los Angeles Lakers player Dwight Howard, and many more.

“Ever since then I’ve been trying to get creative with growing the brand digitally and find ways where other college students can be inspired to start something on their own as well. The internet is such an underappreciated resource that can provide an unlimited amount of opportunities for people,” Larney shared. “I’m extremely thankful for all those who’ve helped me try to grow the brand and opportunities we’ve been given.”

Within a few months, Wildchat Sports has evolved into a digital platform that connects sports and entertainment fans via meaningful podcasts and offers them its merchandise items. Students at universities and even influencers close to him shared that his efforts motivate the community in a great way. Larney shared that he hopes this initiative would continue to inspire others to start their venture. He envisions the brand to be a top podcast and e-commerce hub for sports fans worldwide.
