It's Important to Know How a Water Heater Works

For a vast majority of homeowners, how their water heater works is a total mystery. And maybe that’s a good thing. After all, as long as a homeowner gets hot water in their home when they need it, why worry about how the water gets to where it’s needed?

The truth is that it’s a good idea to have at least a basic idea of how a water heater works and what your options are when something goes wrong. This article will provide a basic understanding of how a water heater works. However, when something does go wrong, the most important thing you should know is how to reach LaVergne’s Plumbing & Heating or visit http://lavergneplumbing.com/.

What’s a Water Heater, and How Does It Work?

As difficult as this might be to believe, water is not delivered to your house hot. Water is just water by the time it gets to your home. What makes the water hot when it gets to your tap is the water heater, which, in most cases, is a large tank designed to gather water where it is heated and hold it until you need it.

There are several different types of water heaters: tank, hybrid, tankless, and point of use, but tank types are by far the most popular.

From Tank to Tap, How They Work

Water heaters are powered by either gas or electricity. In both cases, cold water enters the tank from the bottom. In gas water heaters, the heat is created by a burner located at the bottom of the tank. In electrical water heaters, elements suspended inside the tank heat the water.

A thermostat that is usually located at the base of the water heater allows the homeowner to regulate the water temperature. There is also a pressure relief valve located at about the same place on the heater. This valve is designed to prevent excess buildup of pressure inside the tank.

How Does This Affect You?

When you want to take a bath or wash your hands, a lot of this doesn’t mean much, but generally speaking, when hot water is needed from a tap or for an appliance such as a dishwasher or a washing machine, water is pumped from the top of the water heater and distributed to where the tap is opened.

Most homes are outfitted with 40- to 50-gallon tanks, but 20- to 80-gallon tanks are available. Any homeowner who happens to be shopping for a water heater should seriously consider buying a gas model since they are not only less expensive to operate but also frequently offer a condenser unit that recaptures escaping fumes that are reused to heat cold water entering the tank.
