The best choice when creating gorgeous spaces throughout South Florida’s homes

Fact: The biggest design component in every living room is the custom built-in wall unit. But with so many options available, allow us to explain why Lignum Custom Woodwork is the best choice when creating gorgeous spaces throughout South Florida’s homes. Plus, we’re sharing how the process of creating a room’s flawless focal point comes to fruition.

It starts with Lignum Custom Woodwork Owner Nelson Paredes and his team of twelve members who boast over 15 years in business. Born in Havana, Cuba, Nelson honed his millwork chops at an early age. “I’ve been in the woodwork realm for 29 years total. I started woodworking at age 18 at the University Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos in Havana, Cuba. Afterwards, I worked in a cabinetry shop in Mexico and then as a furniture maker in Argentina.” Armed with a degree in Art Restoration specializing in Wood Archways and Stained Glass and a profound passion for millwork, Nelson opened Lignum Custom Woodwork in Miami, Florida in 2007.

“We strive for the challenge. You see, most carpentry shops steer a narrow road: Kitchens, closets and vanities. That’s it.  However, Lignum Custom Woodwork specializes in the details and combines special finishes, such as metalwork, glasswork and stonework into each and every piece we create,” Nelson says of what separates his business from the millwork masses. Lignum Custom Woodwork offers free estimates for potential clients as well.

Since Lignum’s inception, it has become Miami’s one-stop shop for the 305’s custom woodwork needs. Nelson and his crew have enhanced the interiors of countless high-end homes, built-in bars, restaurants and hotel giants such as Hilton, Marriott and the Ritz-Carlton with their magical millwork.

As for creating a room’s pièce de résistance — a custom built-in wall unit, kitchen cabinets, bathroom vanities, walk-in closets, bookshelves, credenzas, bar counters, tables or entertainment center — Lignum Custom Woodwork is there for clients every step of the way. “From creating an original design on paper to creating a beautiful work of art in real life — our artisans make it happen with aplomb,” Nelson says.

For clients who do not have an architect or designer to help them with the piece’s design, Lignum Custom Woodwork suggests finding photos of inspirational pieces that express the style and finish you love. Also worth noting? Rather than staining wood to match, Lignum recommends selecting a wood with that particular color already. Often times, Lignum provides value engineering to meet a client’s budget.

For materials, Lignum takes a more resilient approach.  “In today’s carpentry and millwork industry there are many products that can be used to achieve the look — but as the old adage goes, looks aren’t everything. We prefer to use Ultralite MDF Panelboards in our manufacturing for its durability, lightweight, and its resistance to warping or chipping,” Nelson adds. The incorporation of LED strip lights in a vast array of color temperatures adds a pop of light to every custom wall-unit by the Lignum team.

From design to installation, custom furniture creations typically take four to six weeks to complete and come to life. Once the shop drawings are signed approved and materials arrive, Lignum Custom Woodwork assigns the project to a Carpenter who is given the production drawings. In tandem, the Carpenter and Apprentice process material, build the unit, dis-assemble and label all the components which then are sent to the Finishing Department where paint and primer preppers correct any imperfections, sand and prepare the surfaces before final the lacquer application.

When it comes to current built-in wall unit design trends, a minimalist aesthetic reigns supreme right now. “In our experience working in the high-end residential market and luxury hospitality industry, there has been a shift from Hollywood Regency and Coastal Design to Urban Modern and Mid-Century Modern. The latter combine the simplicity of Contemporary style with the addition of rich natural materials such as marbles, natural wood grains and even lacquer finishes,” Nelson says. In terms of in-style millwork hues, whites, greys and black continue to be en vogue. However, Lignum Custom Woodwork is currently experiencing a younger clientele seeking more bold and dark colors such as blues and greens with matte and flat finishes.

When it comes to expressing the best part about his job, Nelson says, “I love seeing a project come alive after an installation and the WOW factor from a client falling in love with their new furniture.”

Wow, indeed.
