Virginia Center for Addiction Medicine Rebrands to Master Center
Honoring a Legacy of Helping Individuals and Families Find the Joy and Freedom of Recovery

RICHMOND, Va. – October 12, 2020 – The Virginia Center for Addiction Medicine, Virginia’s premier outpatient addiction treatment center, announced today that it is changing its name to Master Center for Addiction Medicine marking a new era in addiction medicine. In addition, the physician-led addiction treatment program is adding new providers for greater appointment availability and expanding its office location and programming to meet the needs of individuals and families experiencing the complex – yet treatable – disease of addiction.

“We’re proud to introduce our new name, honoring my co-founder, leading addiction psychiatrist Dr. Sherman Master, as we expand our reach throughout the community at a time when high quality treatment is needed more than ever,” said Dr. James Thompson, co-founder and chief medical officer at the Master Center. “The growth of the Master Center is a direct result of our team’s commitment to offering an evidence-based, organized, system-wide health care response to the prevalent and serious disease of addiction.”

Master Center was originally known as Virginia Center for Addiction Medicine (VCAM) when it was co-founded by Dr. James Thompson, one of Richmond’s first board certified Addiction Medicine physicians to be named a Fellow of the American Society of Addiction Medicine, and Dr. Sherman Master, a renowned pioneer in Addiction Psychiatry and one of the most trusted and respected physicians in the region. It was the first physician-led practice to hire and fully utilize Peer Recovery Coaches as personal patient helpers, guides, teachers and care navigators. It’s new name honors the lifelong dedication to the treatment of addiction by Dr. Sherman Master while signaling a new phase of growth for the treatment program dedicated to helping an even greater number of individuals and families find the joy and freedom of recovery.

“My family and I are beyond honored that the Virginia Center for Addiction Medicine has chosen to change its name to honor the memory of our beloved Sherman,” said Dianne Master, wife of the late Dr. Master. “Founding VCAM with Dr. Thompson was the pinnacle of his career, and he was so proud of the special place it has become. Sherman shared with me how sad he was that he would not be around to enjoy VCAM‘s move and expansion. This renaming will serve as an enduring reminder of his lifelong commitment to improving the lives of Virginians struggling with addiction, a commitment shared by his talented and beloved VCAM colleagues.”

Dr. Thompson and Dr. Master opened the treatment center in 2016 and quickly earned a reputation as the premier outpatient addiction treatment center setting a new standard of care for patients suffering from the disease of addiction. As the program has grown it has attracted other addiction treatment leaders committed to the center’s evidence-based approach to healing. In October of 2019, Anna McKean, known for her experience in executive leadership roles in a variety of healthcare settings, joined the organization as its chief executive officer and Dr. Andreas Bienert, a leader in the mental health field, was named as clinical program director. In recent months the Master Center has also added new providers to its growing team to include Cheryl Boggs, NP and Dr. Daniel Ageze to increase appointment availability and same-day service.

In addition to an expanded team, the Master Center’s programming has grown to meet the community’s needs in its new location at 4212 Park Pl Ct. in Glen Allen. The Master Center has also introduced the Insight Program for all new patients as part of the first month of treatment to include participation in specific psycho-educational group meetings such as an introduction to the Master Center, a group meeting explaining Medication-Assisted Treatment, a relapse prevention group, and coping skills group. The Master Center is also offering a free webinar series for individuals, families, and other care professionals featuring a deep roster of medical experts and experienced leaders in addiction medicine on a variety of timely topics each month.

“Changing our name is one small – yet symbolic — shift to much greater change happening at the Master Center this fall. Our mission is to help our patients build a bridge to lifelong recovery, supported through our integrated and expanded services that integrate evidence-based medical and behavioral treatments delivered by a team of physicians, nurse practitioners, therapists, and peer recovery coaches. Through high-quality outpatient treatment, we are defining a new standard in addiction treatment and recovery,” said Anna McKean, CEO of the Master Center.
