A single promotional sweater prevents the waste of 4,850 litres of water

With the rising threats of environmental pollution, global warming, and the degradation of natural resources on this planet, people are getting more careful about what materials they use every day. They are now interested in investing in products that do not pose any harm to the environment. At the same time, they are getting cautious about personal health and well-being. In this scenario, the buyers make informed decisions on what can suit their health while contributing to a reduced carbon footprint. Well, Kingly Ltd. aspires to meet these needs with its extensive range of bespoke clothes, socks, and creative garment packaging.

All of the professionals’ efforts are focused on closed-loop production and eco-sustainability. They have recently launched a line of upcycled knitwear, including socks, sweaters, beanies, and scarves, that have gained huge popularity in the promotional market. These products promise wonderful results for environmental safety while making them a reliable choice for the world.

The main goal of the company is to reduce the waste of water and the usage of added chemicals in the textile production process. Kingly Ltd. operates with a special algorithm that helps them determine the environmental savings with every order. For instance, with 650 grams of upcycled yarn that is used for the creation of one upcycled sweater, the company can prevent the waste of approximately 4 850 litres of water. Moreover, by producing 1000 upcycled sweaters the company saves 4 851 280 litres of water, 18.2000 MW/h of energy, 0.3673 tons of pollutants, 7.4100 tons of CO₂ emissions and prevents 808.28 m2 of land from being turned into a textile land fiend.

The experienced professionals at Kingly Ltd. are aiming towards a better environment while introducing reliable compostable packages for the knitted garments. The bags are made out of potato starch and, when being disposed of, are able to decompose within eight weeks. They are also working on the production of recyclable carton boxes to ensure sustainable transportation as well.

The company has introduced another innovative, Polygiene anti-bacterial protection treatment. It helps with reducing the growth of odor-causing bacteria. Also, as there is no need to wash garments time and again to get rid of the unwanted smell, the fabrics are likely to last longer. You don’t need to carry multiple pairs of socks in your bag while traveling for an adventure tour. That way you can save much of your time and money while preserving more energy and water which helps with reducing the environmental footprint.

Also, the company is a member of the British-Bulgarian Business Association (BBBA), British Promotional Merchandise Association (BPMA), and Promotional Products Association International (PPAI).

In order to learn more, we recently asked Robert Armor, Founder and Managing Director of Kingly Ltd., a few questions:

Q. What inspired you to develop such eco-friendly products?

A. The company was founded in 2014 and its main purpose was to become a major player in eco-sustainable apparel. My team and I created a company based on the circular economy – we have the chance to close the production loop when it comes to producing textile products and to use the textiles wastage. We sell to resellers and promotional agencies that represent giants like Coca-Cola, Samsung, Google, Michelin, and many more.

Having worked 20-25 years in the textile industry, you get to see some very frightening things. For example, when the cotton bales come in, and then the production process starts, it is alarming to see that hundreds of liters of water are required for such a small amount of cotton. It can be dyed in different kinds of cotton. And then you find out that these dyes are extremely dangerous to the environment. When all that dying is finished, that water is flushed into the siege system, so you can pollute the water supply. It is bad for the fish, it is bad for your health.

The clash with reality was overwhelming. We realized that in order to cultivate 1 kilo of cotton, you need up to 20 000 litres of water. And that is even before it can be used in textile production. So we decided to focus on eliminating all these unnecessary chemical dyes and to preserve water as a natural resource. With upcycling, we are taking something which already exists – textile wastage, and without the use of added water or chemicals, we can make it something better. That is how we ended up using upcycled yarn from textile waste for the creation of upcycled socks that we packed in compostable bags.

The demand for such products is higher than ever before and this is a subject that has always been the heart of everything that Kingly Ltd. holds dear. For instance, take our upcycled socks. 80% of the sock in fact is made from upcycled cotton. And by using a special algorithm, we determined that with the creation of a single pair of socks we can save up to 1300 litres of water.

Moreover, the amount of textile waste that our suppliers from Spain have managed to turn into upcycled yarn in 2019 is over 27 million kilos. According to their data, in a single year 40 billion litres of water have been prevented from being wasted. And the amount of toxic chemicals that haven’t been used is over 2,9 million kilos. Harmful CO₂ has dropped dramatically – with 54,5 million kilos, and the saved energy is 142 million kW/h. Moreover, the space that has been prevented from turning into a land field is 6,7 million m².

Q. Are these sustainable products more expensive than the normal products available on the market?*

The price of custom upcycled goods is probably 10-15% higher than the one for standard cotton. But the benefits are far greater. Moreover, over 90% of our production is packaged in compostable bags and our clients don’t have to pay extra for them.

Q. Which market you are serving at present and what are your expansion plans?*

A. The most positive response we have had with regards to our upcycled socks came from the United Kingdom, Ireland, France, and Germany. The other countries are adopting these environmentally friendly solutions in the textile industry at a slower pace.

Currently, we are based in Bulgaria but we also have branches in the UK and the USA. We have no plans to open other factories any time soon. The reason is that just recently moved to a facility 5 times larger than our previous factory. That will allow us to grow further without moving to another location.
