IScream Ice Cream Serves Up Hope During Covid Crisis
IScream Ice Cream Rolls was undergoing a renovation. The business was set to open in downtown Atlanta in March of 2020. Days after celebrating its opening, the COVID-19 crisis shut the shop down. Founder Khalilah Womack didn’t back down. She has pivoted her black-owned business and found a way to succeed in times of great adversity. Now, IScream Ice Cream is a buzz on social media with Instagram Influencers serving up yummy posts related to the product and the atmosphere.
“It was hard. Laying off people days after opening because of COVID was not any fun. But, after the George Floyd incident, as people took to the streets to raise awareness, they also took to our shop. It’s black-owned and we serve up some of the most known comfort treats and everything clicked at the right time. Our challenges forced changes but now we are able to accept all the online attention and continue to serve customers- of course, working around social distancing restrictions,” said Womack.
IScream Ice Cream Rolls was elevated from a single Tweet of a customer. From there, the media caught on and the company was featured on a major cable network. The company is also adding to the revitalization of downtown Atlanta. IScream Ice Cream has an indoor swing, rolled ice cream, baked good, artisanal tea, and offers products with and without dairy. The company has also been awarded over fifty thousand dollars in grants and has been able to operate thanks to its products, the buzz on social media, and a need for something sweet in times when things can seem so bleak.
“We are really working to create an experience. This was always my goal. Board games, a photo area, and so forth. With COVID, we have had to alter how we create our customer experience but it is still cool and very memorable. In fact, we call them Instagram shareable moments. We have a lot of diverse customers – including celebrities – coming in to absorb the experience, taste the products, and enjoy the limitless flavors, finished Womack.
Sales for ice cream have surged during the pandemic. People are looking to get out, take a walk, and have a quick dining experience that allows them to remain socially safe. IScream Ice Cream Rolls fits this role. Womack’s continued endeavors to help revitalize downtown Atlanta and service her customers continue daily with new ideas for toppings, teas and treats.
