Health Coach and a founder of “Get Fit & Happy” explains benefits of a behavioral-based approach to weight loss.

The USA ranks amongst the unhealthiest nations in the world. According to the World Health Organization, in 2020, adult obesity reached an astounding 40% for the first time in history. One of the main reasons behind it is that we simply consume too many calories while moving too little. Also, the majority of our food intake comes in boxes and packages, being heavily processed, full of additives and chemicals. Our hormones and enzymes are off the charts. We eat too fast while being distracted by phones or TV.

It seems obvious that eating fewer calories by jumping on a calorie-restrictive diet should solve everything, right? Well, not quite. It turns out that traditional calorie-restrictive diets just don’t work for most of us. And here’s a couple of reasons why.

1. Diets simply give us a list of what to eat (and what not to). The problem is that they don’t teach us how to follow the plan, and that’s the tricky part. People, in general, know that they should eat more vegetables, fruits, lean proteins, and consume less sugar. But they are unable to get themselves to do it consistently. Following a meal plan or diet requires several skills that many people lack. Time management, prioritization, planning, understanding food labels, calorie counting, recognizing hunger cues, or eating slowly to name a few. And that’s a lot to handle all at once without any support.

2. Diets often promise unrealistic and quick results. One simply can’t lose more than 1-2 pounds of body fat a week healthily and sustainably. Therefore, even if the crazy week of juice cleansing leaves someone 6 pounds lighter, in reality, the body just got depleted of nutrients and dehydrated. With that, the weight will bounce back right once the diet is over.

3. Any new diet causes a big amount of stress to our body and brain. The more restrictive the diet is, the worse the stress level. Humans are creatures of habit and anything that requires us to do things differently and step outside of our comfort zone is stressful. That’s why so many people give up diets only after a couple of days and get back to their old habits.

So is there any solution that would guarantee sustainable and healthy weight loss? Luckily, the answer is yes. Behavioral-based approach. Jana Masri, a certified Life Coach and Nutritionist, uses this method to help her clients transform their lives. For good.
