History of the Leslie-Alford-Mims House

The Leslie-Alford-Mims House was built by Scottish tailor Archibald Leslie in 1840 for his bride, Isabelle Rogers, whose carved initials people can still see there. It is a two-story, Greek Revival-style frame dwelling.

The house withstood nearly two centuries and two weeks of Union occupation during the Civil War and served as George Benton Alford’s home, founder of Holly Springs. Additions and modifications were made to the house about 1876 and 1900, and include Colonial Revival style design elements. Alford doubled the home’s floor space, adding a second floor, a widow’s walk, and a ballroom for the fancy parties he favored.

In 1940 the house was passed to Alford’s grandson, Edwin Mims, and his family. Then in 2014, business partners Brooke Everhart and Priscilla Erwin worked together to restore and revitalize the house. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places by The United States Department of the Interior and is a Wake County Historical Landmark.
