Health Sciences High and Middle College Receives Grant to Provide 470 Students with Internet Access

SAN DIEGO – March 17, 2021 – Health Sciences High and Middle College (HSHMC) in San Diego, CA, was just awarded a grant that will allow them to provide 470 of their students in need (about 70% of the student body) with internet access for the 2021-2022 school year. This historic development represents a major success for the school’s mission of delivering a world-class education to a diverse student body, no matter their personal circumstances.

The grant will allow HSHMC to participate in the K-12 Homework Gap Program, a $10 million initiative between AT&T and Connected Nation, a nonprofit organization committed to bridging the technological gap faced by underserved communities. The K-12 Homework Gap Program responds to a very real need in the country, as nearly 17 million US children do not have a viable internet connection, and so cannot take part in digital learning. So far, the program has benefited over 100 organizations and schools across the country, with plans to reach more than 35,000 students nationwide. Starting in July, the program will be implemented at HSHMC, providing devices that cover a year of free mobile Wi-Fi hotspots, wireless internet access, and content filtering services for students who do not currently have connection to the internet.

In response to the grant approval, Alex Gonzalez, director of Digital Instruction and Technology said, “We have always been committed to providing every one of our students with the tools they need to receive the best educational opportunities possible, and this grant is another step forward in our mission.”
