Operation Immunity

Harborside Elementary recently hosted the City of Chula Vista’s first mobile vaccination clinic to be held at a school campus in our District. Operation Immunity is a mobile COVID-19 vaccination unit that provides vaccinations to hard-to-reach populations in Chula Vista.

All 151 doses were administered to those who made appointments or walked-up for the vaccination opportunity. The event took place on Friday, April 23. Hard-to-reach populations of seniors, kinship caregivers, parents and community members expressed thanks and appreciation to those who made the event possible.

“We have seen families today that we have not seen in a really long time,” said Principal Lisa Forehand. “We’ve seen whole families come to get vaccinated—grandparents that are caregivers, parents. It has been great to be able to provide this opportunity at our school. The transportation issues, the technological issues—these sometimes make it hard for our families to make an appointment at some of the County vaccination sites.”

The Harborside clinic was the result of a partnership of the District, City of Chula Vista, Chula Vista Fire Department and many amazing volunteers and school staff. Operation Immunity will return to Harborside on Friday, May 21 to administer the second dose. Organizers are exploring future vaccination clinics at additional high-need campuses in communities that had been hit hard by COVID-19.

Harborside serves a community that was hard-hit during the peak of COVID-19. Associate Principal Kim Callado said multiple students experienced a death in the family—whether a parent, grandparent, or other relative. “Our heart breaks every time we hear of a family losing someone to COVID-19,” Callado said. “The kids don’t fully understand what is going on. They are fearful. We’re trying to make sure, now that they are here for hybrid learning on campus, that we are able to provide for their social-emotional needs. We are very happy to provide this opportunity for vaccination.”

Getting the COVID-19 vaccine adds one more layer of protection for students’ family members and other loved ones. #VaccinesSaveLives
