Founder of Nila Skies Leverages the Challenges of Motherhood, Career, and Social Responsibility
Amidst the uncertainty of the pandemic, a small business in Texas is on a mission to start from the ground up and plant seeds of hope in our environment. Nila Skies, a design studio and stationery shop founded by artist and designer, Neela Paramkusham, began its journey in November 2020 after Neela had left her job as a design manager to take care of her three young kids.
It was the question many mothers faced during the pandemic: continue to work or stay home to virtually school the kids? The “compromise” was to do both or to overturn their current lifestyles and pivot their careers. Neela took the challenge.
Nila Skies’ mission is to donate a portion of every sale to fund the planting of a tree in areas where deforestation, forest fires, and drought have impacted forests and the communities that rely on them. The brand is in partnership with five other small businesses in the US who produce Neela’s artwork onto the final products, which range from personalized journals and cards to art prints and are currently available on the Etsy marketplace at etsy.com/nilaskiesstationery.
Every step of the process from creation to delivery is accounted for in deciding how to best reduce our carbon footprints, which is one reason why the brand is selling on Etsy, an organization that offsets carbon emissions for every package shipped. The pandemic has put a magnifying glass on every single decision we make. From grocery shopping to purchasing gifts, we have had to think ten times more about what we can safely do for our health and our wallets during this time of uncertainty.
“I was worried about whether starting my business during the pandemic was the right choice. But I realized, if this is my long term goal with a mission that’s greater than me and greater than right now, then it’s worth not wasting another minute,” she affirmed.
