Roca Spain’s Annual Design Contest: JumpTheGap®

Innovation has long been a driving force behind what makes Roca so special. This year, Roca aims to recognize and reward creative pioneers in the space, with the announcement of Roca Spain’s Annual Design Contest.

As summer quickly approaches, the weather isn’t the only thing heating up, so is the anticipation for the 10th iteration of Roca’s jumpthegap® contest, inviting the best and brightest talent in the industry to participate. Driven by evolving environmental challenges, consumer interests and regulatory compliance, this year’s submissions are certain to set the bar high, taking inspiration from Roca’s own collection to push the envelope of what’s possible.

Innovative Solutions Designed to Tackle Modern-day Challenges

Those who participate will be put to the test, challenged with developing new and innovative solutions for the bathroom space, while addressing and overcoming the challenges of the UN’s 2030 agenda for sustainable development.

Ever-agile, this year’s participating designers and architects from around the world will focus on creating solutions that address modern challenges, ranging from sustainability to adapting to the post-pandemic world.

According to Marc Viadot, Roca Group’s Corporate Marketing and Design Director, “The concept of ‘future’ has changed”. “There are new challenges brought about by the pandemic, while others are of growing and vital importance, such as preserving the planet, supporting its diversity, or fighting inequalities. jumpthegap®has evolved to respond more directly to these issues, searching for technologically feasible ideas, providing added value to innovation and showing diversity, sustainability, timelessness and adaptability – values which have always been a part of Roca’s DNA”, he adds.

2021 Competition Categories

The 2021 competition has been divided into four new and exciting categories:

1. Wellness and Health: focused on delivering peace of mind, balance, harmony and comfort

2. [Un]neutral Design: aimed at ingeniously and meaningfully addressing the diversity of human beings and fostering independent living

3. Water and Energy: promoting an intelligent and conscientious use of environmental resources

4. Crisis and Emergency: designed to effectively and feasibly overcome and handle crisis and emergency situations, leveraging replicable materials and technologies

Project Submission Criteria, Dates and Judging

Key Dates

Projects must be submitted online (at www.jumpthegap.net) between May 3rd and June 3rd in order to qualify. An initial pre-selection of candidates will then be carried out by representatives of the Roca Design Centre and the Roca Global Innovation Hub.

Between June 16th-27th and June 28th-July 4th, two submission reviews will be carried out, with each project assessed by a jury of renowned professionals, led by Japanese architect and 2014 Pritzker Prize winner Shigeru Ban (Jury President).

Winners and Prizes

On July 6th a virtual ceremony will be held, during which the winners will be revealed. Thirteen (13) prizes are up for grabs, including €2,000 for the winner of each of the four categories, eight prizes of €500 for the 1st and 2nd runner up of each category, and a grand prize of €5,000 for the ‘Best of the Best’ project, selected from the four winners.

Public Roundtables and Debates

This year’s jumpthegap® is set to extend well beyond the awards ceremony date. Several roundtables and debates are scheduled throughout 2021 and into 2022 to explore and discuss solutions for a more sustainable future. These roundtables will also present an opportunity for winners to discuss their own ground-breaking projects.
