Walter Morales – Baton Rouge Louisiana Businessman, Entrepreneur, and Educator.
The Walter Morales Scholarship for Urban Education Improvement will award $5,000 to One University or High School Student. Scholarship Aims to Generate Awareness to Help Improve on Urban Education

Walter Morales, Baton Rouge business owner, entrepreneur, and founder of The Louisiana Achievement Center Academies offers a $5000 scholarship for high school and university students. Participants are invited to submit ideas that will help transform urban educational institutions. Walter Morales, who is also retired faculty from Louisiana State University, with more than two decades of experience in teaching, is closely involved with various organizations in efforts to improve upon the issues that plague the urban education system.

Jennifer Brownlow, an undergraduate student was excited to learn about the scholarship, “this is certainly something that I would like to participate in… there is a strong connection with the subject, as I have seen the challenges first hand in my classes…” Many students have expressed interest to take part in the scholarship that will close on February 15, 2022, with the winners scheduled to be announced a month later.

Walter Morales, as a distinguished faculty member with extensive teaching experience and success in business wishes to spark change in the lives of students and society. Considered as an expert witness for testifying in court about matters regarding portfolio management, securitizations, and fixed income securities, he also served as Chief Investment Officer of Baton Rouge Bank’s Trust division and founded his own investment firm where he serves as President and Chief Investment Officer. Deeply committed to social causes, he is a member of the 100 Black Men of Baton Rouge.

When quizzed about the scholarship, Walter opened up about the subject that he is passionate about. “While conventional urban education practices are never intended to create disparities, there are shortfalls.  My aim is to help identify challenges from a first person perspective and ignite interest the student community.”  Various acts have been passed in the past to address challenges in Urban Education, such as the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), 1965, the No Child Left Behind Act, 2001 and the Every Student Succeeds Act, 2015. While the Acts have helped address certain gaps, there are areas that have still not been bridged.

The scholarship is open to undergraduate university students and high school students who are enrolling in a university in the United States. A single winner will be announced next March, after critical analysis of submissions by a panel of experts. This scholarship seeks ideas that will change learning, and transform societies, into a world with lesser disparities, and more equality.
