Neha Lohia is a promising film director focused on telling the stories of outstanding women throughout history. Her latest passion project ‘Yashodhara The Buddha’s Wife’ is her very first New York film premiere on Friday Nov 4th, 2022.

Dynamic female director Neha Lohia aspires to bring women’s stories to the forefront of filmmaking. She moved from Mumbai, India to New York City, USA in order to pursue her filmmaking goals. Her latest period drama themed short film titled, ‘Yashodhara The Buddha’s Wife’ is now all set to captivate audiences. The film will premiere at the 12th Annual Queens World Film Festival in Queens, New York. With a mission to feature a highly diverse group of radical filmmakers and directors from all over the world, The Queens World Film Festival has designated a block for Indian directors titled, ‘Voice of India’, which Neha Lohia is proud to be a part of.

“Neha Lohia is a force to be reckoned with and her work exudes the passion she brings to everything she does. We are excited to share her work and feel the pairing of the two films makes for a strong night.” – Katha Cato, Executive Director of Queens World Film Festival

Sharing the poignant and often forgotten story of Buddha’s wife Yashodhara, the film brings to life a historic tale of love, loss, catharsis and enlightenment. While the world knows about Buddha and his quest for enlightenment, history has forgotten the story of his wife’s existence, whom Buddha abandoned on the night of the birth of their child.

Neha Lohia’s moving short film shares a glimpse of the story of Yashodhara and her own personal journey towards female divinity and enlightenment. With the character of Yashodhara played by Nelly Munoz and the character of Buddha played by William Carabano, this short film aims to communicate to the audiences that suffering can often be the biggest portal to enlightening. The short film takes on its full force when Buddha returns to his wife after 12 years, and she asks him 3 truly prominent questions pertaining to his solitary path towards enlightenment. This conversation gives audiences a glimpse into Yashodhara’s own path in life while Buddha was gone. The story ultimately reveals that while the routes they chose were different, both of them had a shared journey and arrived at the same destination.

“Yashodhara The Buddha’s wife is uniquely contemplative which is refreshing as Neha displays trust in the audience to be able to experience this story.” Donald Preston Cato, Artistic Director for Queens World Film Festival

Neha Lohia made an official press statement to discuss her vision behind Yashodhara The Buddha’s Wife, “The life story of Yashodhara is not only historically significant, but it is also very important for me on a personal level. For many years, I have wanted to share the courage and strength of Yashodhara with the world, and I am so happy to finally be doing it with this short film at my very first premiere in New York.”

She further added, “While this short film has already received a heart-warming and positive response from those who have seen it so far, it barely scratches the surface of Yashodhara’s truly inspiring, important, and fascinating life story. While this happened nearly 2500 years ago, it is equally as relevant today because women’s suffering is still glorified in this world. As a director, producer and writer, I am fully geared to expand this proof-of-concept short film into a complete episodic series with nearly 6 seasons, or into a major feature film production with possibility of a prequel and sequel.”
