"In the Belly of the Fish" by Julie de Belle: A Memoir of Cultural Understanding and Teaching on a Reservation

Mar 8, 2023 – Bilingual writer Julie de Belle’s latest memoir, “In the Belly of the Fish,” offers a unique perspective on teaching and cultural understanding. Born in Ottawa, Ontario, but living in Quebec, Julie de Belle shares her journey of leaving Montreal in 1995 with her three-year-old son to teach on a reservation in Northern Canada, the same year as the Quebec sovereignty referendum. Seeking a life away from consumerism, noise, and hypocrisy, Julie de Belle found herself facing cultural challenges and isolation but ultimately emerged stronger and wiser from her experiences.

Julie de Belle’s passion for writing began in her early teens. She has been a member of the Literary Translators of Canada, where she first tried translating with “Words on the Move.” Her poetry has been featured in various publications, including “Writing Against Racism” in 2001 and “Le Bel Âge” magazine in 2002. She has also had several English poems published in “Sunday@6” magazine and “Poets Against War,” as well as writing various chapbooks. In 2013, Julie de Belle published her first French and English poetry collection called “2FACES” with Broken Rules Press. In 2018, she published “Enseigner,” a memoir of her life as a teacher over a period of 28 years, with Les Éditions du Cram.

Now, with “In the Belly of the Fish,” Julie de Belle offers readers an intimate and honest account of her journey as a teacher on a reservation. Her experiences offer valuable lessons on cultural sensitivity, understanding, and the importance of education in unique and often misunderstood environments.

In the Belly of the Fish” is a must-read for young adults and adults, teachers, and anyone interested in the history of Quebec and/or indigenous life. The book is available for purchase on Amazon and through other major retailers.
