Baban G Suri is a Canadian-based, Indian-manufactured retail company. The company operates mainly online with one-on-one consultations with the designer in Vancouver, B.C. The company uses Instagram, Facebook and other social media sites to engage with their users. The label works with mainly Indian brides and their families to create couture bridal looks. They currently launched their online website for online shopping in 2020 during the pandemic.

History

Baban G Suri is a clothing label and founded by Baban Suri (then Gill) in 2013. It was in full operation for Spring/Summer 2014 season. Baban started working in the retail industry by working at her mother’s boutique in Surrey B.C. at the age of 15 after school and on the weekends. She pursued a degree Fashion Design school in Richmond, B.C. in 2012, but in 2013 she dropped out to start her own clothing label and travelled to Delhi, India to start her workshop.

Baban Suri was born in Toronto, Ontario Canada on January 16, 1989 as a first generation to an immigrant couple. They later moved to Surrey to be with their close relatives in the 90s. Baban went to elementary schools and high schools in Surrey. She was selected among 500 to attend the Fashion Design program at Kwantlen Polytechnic University with a class of 40. She was only there for 1.5 years before she realized this program wasn’t for her. So she dropped out and took business classes to learn the foundations of business. Since much of the fashion design program was geared towards creating western ensembles and she wanted to start creating traditional Indian ensembles, she decided to take action and start living her dreams. So, she decided to travel to Delhi, India in hopes to start her clothing line. In India, she was constantly defeated with finding a location and trustworthy embroiders, seamstresses, and a manager to start work. After a couple of months, she was able to secure a few people to start work. Baban started with 3 employees in 2013 and now has over 25 employees (2020). In 2020, during the COVID pandemic, Baban cancelled her annual trip to India to stay in Canada with her family.

Currently, Baban Suri divides her time between Canada and India with her husband and son.

Charity

In Winters of 2014 and 2015, Baban Suri (then Baban Gill) initiated a clothing drive to help the homeless and underprivileged of Downtown Eastside get through the winter with blankets and warm clothes, socks. Since this initiative was unsafe due to the high demand of people fighting for clothes, she ended this cause and now donates to local charities to who do similar work for the underprivileged of Downtown Eastside.

In Summer 2014 she was featured front cover of Desi Today magazine to introduce herself, her label and showcase her first Spring/Summer 2014 Collection. She was given an opportunity to share her story of how she grew up and became a designer.

April 3, 2015 she was featured in an American online magazine, WeDeside, about her label and how Baban Suri started her brand.
