Screening by the Sea, Carnival on the Island: The Third HIIFF Gifts Audiences with Diversified Film Screenings

In 2020, the Third Hainan Island International Film Festival (HIIFF) extends the curatorial philosophy of the first two iterations and brings nearly two hundred well-acclaimed domestic and international films to our audiences. These films cover a diverse range of geographies and epochs. Utilizing the specific geographical advantages of Hainan Island and integrated with the current backgrounds of our era, the Third HIIFF actualizes diversification in the contents and forms of our film exhibitions.

The Third HIIFF has established eight Out-of-Competition screening sections. The Gala section, freshly established in 2020, presents six international films featuring star-studded casts, patiently waiting for their opportunity to meet and amaze their audiences. Our guests will enjoy these films in Sanya cinemas, full of star-lit moods, expanding the spectrum of film festivals and experiencing the enduring charms of cinema.

The other seven Out-of-Competition sections are uniquely conceived, paying regard to different facades of international cinema.

World Cinema section curates prime films that have received universal attention from major international film festivals to reveal the trends and changes in the international cinematic landscape. Asian Spectrum exhibits select films from Asia, comprehensively showcasing works by talented filmmakers from all over Asia. Focusing on the newest additions to Chinese language cinema, China Vista covers a multitude of genres and topics, displaying contemporary Chinese cinema in all its vigor and profound creative strengths. Reality Matters section traverses the medium of documentary films to illustrate the rich textures of the real world. Possibilities is a gateway to the refreshing views of film auteurs, who are known for their incredible originality and avant-garde temperament. Spotlight section highlights Africa, the second largest continent, and observes the matchless charms of film works that have left impressive legacies on African cinema. Cinema Regained section will exhibit four HD restored films by genre master Andrzej Zulawski, as a tribute to the 80th anniversary of the Polish director’s birth, and the newest 4K restorations of classic cinema.

Screening by the Sea is the most geographically distinctive event of the Hainan Island International Film Festival. Our film audiences are fully absorbed in the romantic seaside airs and directly exposed to the allures of the silver screen. This exclusive screening series naturally extends to the 2020 exhibition schedule. HIIFF has established the preferred screening-on-the-beach model at locations including Haitang Bay and Dadonghai Beach. Five universally celebrated classic films will be screened, creating profoundly unforgettable experiences for our live audiences.

Just as the screenings occur in Sanya, where the HIIFF main venue is located, the Around the Island Screenings are equally captivating. We bring thirty-five films, spanning extended histories and geographies, to twelve cinemas in Haikou, Qionghai, and Danzhou Cities. Audiences around the whole of Hainan Island will be able to participate and embrace the film-viewing possibilities that HIIFF offers.

Due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, online screenings have become a novel model for film festivals to exhibit their films. The separation of physical spaces presents no obstacle for the delivery of cinematic enchantments. In 2020, the HIIFF Organizing Committee has incorporated virtual screenings in our curatorial considerations. Fifteen domestic and foreign films will be screened online through our partnership with, delivering visual and aural feasts for all cinephiles unable to attend HIIFF in person.

Always aiming for the developmental goals of “Year-round Screening, Island-wide Screening, National Film Viewing, and Whole Industry Chain,” Hainan Island International Film Festival has always been dedicated to diversified film screenings in service of an expanded range of cinephiles and the general public. Whether they are travelers from various parts of the world or residents in Hainan, all attendees will be fully immersed in the sumptuous cinematic gathering at the Third Hainan Island International Film Festival.
